This book lacks depth.
I had mixed feelings about this book. I LOVED Carrie Ryan's Forest of Hands and Teeth trilogy -- which had a fantastic setting, was exciting, had memorable characters, and a good plot -- but Daughter of Deep Silence is completely different. The setting is boring (they're on an island, but she's so wrapped up in herself that she never really explores it), the characters are largely forgettable, and the plot just isn't very good. The plot can actually be typed out in a single paragraph...you really wouldn't need any more space for it. I'm not going to "ruin" the plot for anyone though (that's not the purpose of a review), so I won't do that.Almost the entirety of the book is about revenge. The main character is incredibly jaded about something terrible that happened to her when she was younger, and she can't get over it. She plots and plots her revenge throughout the book, and when she finally gets the balls to carry out her plans, something goes wrong. And that "something" that goes wrong is really predictable. That's the entire book. Seriously. The only part I truly liked was the very end -- the last few pages. If I wasn't a stickler for finishing things I start I doubt I would've gotten through this one.I'd pass on this one if I were you. Hopefully Carrie writes a thriller next, because that seems to be her specialty.

Great novel about Revenge!
I enjoyed this young adult novel, with a fairly original plot and great characters. Suspenseful and unexpected, the pages kept turning. Every so often I wanted to turn back the pages to see if I missed something. Revenge, a great theme. Nice quick read for adults too.

Better than I anticipated!
Carrie Ryan owes me another night of sleep. I first discovered her after seeing a book trailer for "The Forest of Hands and Teeth". The night I bought that book I opened it up thinking I would read a few pages and go to bed. I spent the next 6 hours or so engrossed in Ryan's writing and a very sleepy day following it as I literally could not put down the book. So it was again for "Daughter of Deep Silence". I had pre-ordered this book since I am a huge fan of Ryan's but had honestly forgotten what it was about. It downloaded to my Kindle and I opened it up thinking I would only read a few pages and go to bed. Jump to me at 1:30 AM this morning finally putting the book down. What a read! I wasn't sure what to expect and I was very pleasantly surprised at the plot twists and the story in general. Frances is an amazing character and the way she is written makes her jump out of the page at you. You feel for Libby and Frances and Cecil and even Grey. You want to know what happens. You want to know if she finally gets her revenge. You want to keep reading to find out what really happened on the Persephone on that fateful night and Ryan truly doesn't disappoint. Great characters and a pace that is set just right to keep you wanting to find out what happens next. The only con I found, if it even would be considered a con, is that the story reminded me a little bit of the CW show, "Ringer" mixed with another show, "Revenge". If you had taken those two shows and thrown them together, you might had found a similar plot but as I never actually watched either of those shows, it was just a thought in the back of my head as I read this story. If you are a fan of Ryan or a fan of a good revenge story, this is the book for you! An amazing read.

She soon discovers the boy she fell in love with on the ship
Victoria Greyson is dead and Amanda Clarke has retired, but God has smiled on us this day in the form of a young adult novel from Carrie Ryan. It's a classic tale of revengey goodness as fourteen year old Frances Mace survives a vicious attack on the cruise ship she and her family are on. When she and new friend Libby survive the gunmen's attempts to murder the entire ship, she finds herself adrift for seven days. Libby does not survive, dying right before their rescue. Libby's father suggests Frances takes his daughters place so he can protect her using his wealth and power. She soon discovers the boy she fell in love with on the ship, the son of the powerful Senator Wells, and the Senator himself also survived, but have lied to the public saying it was a giant wave that sank the ship, not gunmen. For four years, Frances, now Libby hides from the public, planning how to bring down the Senator who is clearly involved. When Libby's father dies it's time for Libby to come back home and start her venture of revenge. Working her way into the lives of the Senator's family, and trying to avoid Libby's past coming back to haunt her, Libby works swiftly and methodically to gain the evidence she needs and set up the fall of the powerful Senator-but at what cost to herself, to Libby, to the boy who loved Libby before she died, and the boy Frances loved?A must read for all fans of the television show Revenge. I loved it and raced right through it. I thought the end was a little rushed, things clicked into place a little fast, but the build up was fantastic. I feel like this could have been stretched out into more than one book so we could get more details, more twists, more...revenge and consequences. There are definitely things left unanswered in the end (and I'm not talking about the epilogue) and personally, I'd love to see a sequel with the aftermath of Frances/Libby's revenge. I highly recommend.

Excellent Stand Alone
Wonderful book. Interesting concept, and unique storytelling. It is really nice to see a standalone book instead of a series.
