Q: how many of you prefer this over the original bumbo?

I didn't have the original but 4 of my sisters in law did and they all agree that this one is MUCH better. It's height adjustable, clips onto a chair securely and grows with the baby. Our daughter has been using it since 3 months and is now 8 months and we use it as her high chair. One of the best baby purchases we made.

Q: How big (size, not age) does a baby have to be to use this safely? My 3 1/2 month old can sit up with minimal support, but is a very petite baby.

I would wait until baby can sit up unassisted for at least 30 seconds and is very sturdy. I bought this for my son right before 4 months and he could also sit up with minimal support but he just wasn't ready for this product because he wasn't sturdy enough yet. I can definitely understand why they say the product is 6+ months because most babies really cannot sit up well enough unassisted for long periods of time until after that. Otherwise, baby will kinda flop to one side in this chair.

Q: Are the leg openings on this more accomodating than the original bumbo? I don't have exceptionally large children and still struggled with the fit.

Yes, my son grew out of the original bumbo. This one fits his legs. The blue part comes out as well, making the opening even bigger.
