The old formula did not have "sodium lauryl sulfate". some new versions from Sensodyne don't have it. It is considered a moderate hazard and skin irritant, Its also used in many soaps and shampoos. Check the ingredients.

Q: Is the deep clean sensodyne toothpaste the gel?

Not a true gel in the sense of the word, but a very gel-like paste. I like it because my teeth really feel clean after 3 minutes with my SonicCare toothbrush. Gives you that after dental cleaning polished feel. Good stuff!
